There are three Baltic States, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and adding a visit to the Latvian capital Riga, the largest city in the Baltics, gives you a chance to see the similarities and differences between two of them, Estonia and Latvia.
Latvia is the middle Baltic State geographically, lying between Estonia and Lithuania, and is also the middle state by size and population. The capital, however, is far from middling in Baltic terms. Founded in 1201 Riga was once the biggest city of the Swedish kingdom, and was later the third most important port in imperial Russia.
Febuary 4th: Transfer from Tallinn to Riga via Pärnu by minibus or coach at 3 pm.
Arrival at the Estonian resort town of Pärnu. Pärnu City reception and meeting with Pärnu tourist guides (arranged by Pärnu guides).
10 pm arrival in Riga, check-in at the Hotel Gutenbergs in the old town.
Day 2
February 5th: Riga city tour and tour to Rundale Palace
The old town, listed in the UNESCO World Heritage list, is home to the oldest and largest of the Dome cathedrals in the Baltics, while the beautifully restored buildings of the Town Hall and the House of the Brotherhood of the Blackheads are Riga’s newest landmarks. Artfully decorated Art Nouveau buildings from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries can be found in many streets of the city.
During the walking tour of Old Riga we will meet the Mayor of Riga or a representative of Riga City Council at the Small Guild and enjoy a performance by the children's folk dance group Dzintarins.
(arranged by Latvian guides).
Short organ music concert at the Dome Cathedral. Lunch will be served in an old town restaurant before departure from Riga for Rundale.
The Palace of Rundale is a gem of Baroque and Rococo architecture. Built by Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the designer of the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, the palace has been restored to its original glory and furnished as it was in the days when the most powerful figures of the imperial Russian Household had their base there. The German families of the region dominated the Russian empire for a period, and from what is now a sleepy backwater in provincial Latvia, one of the world’s most powerful countries was run. You can find out more about the life of those times in this charming Baltic Versailles.
8 pm Farewell dinner with Latvian tourist guides at the national restaurant LIDO with a folk dance group performance
Day 3
February 6th: Individual transfers Riga hotel-Riga airport or bus station as ordered in advance for extra charge.
Or stay for an extra night. Latvian tourist guides are happy to offer an optional programme to those leaving later in the afternoon.
